Co-presidents remain at Sony Classics

Independent film veterans Michael Barker and Tom Bernard have reached a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment for a five-year extension of their tenure as co-presidents of Sony Pictures Classics, Sony's specialty film division.

The move comes amid turbulence at other indie film divisions of large corporations. Miramax co-chairmen Harvey and Bob Weinstein are in the middle of tense contract renegotiations with Walt Disney Co., causing speculation that the duo might leave.

Messrs. Barker and Bernard say that Sony gives them the autonomy to choose the films they want to release. In the past year, SPC's releases have included Pedro Almodóvar's Talk to Her and the documentary Winged Migration, both of which grossed more than $10 million in North America.
