HOMELESS HEARTS
By Shane Snipes
We Don't Live Here Anymore, 2004
w/d: John Curran

In an effort to be a totally unbiased news and review source, here is the CON version of this film.

Strolling down the street in New York City, I see couples holding hands. It's hot out and most New Yorkers migrate to the side of the street where there is shade. The pairs instinctively talk less than those having just met. As they walk by I wonder about their lives and how they gently coast along side each other. The trying times adding to a simmering brew of potent ale that is their ego. "You Don't Live Here Anymore" is a portrait of couples in transition where people learn to love each other without feeling for each other. This is not a criticism of the actors in the film but approbation to them. They performed a mini miracle in developing incredible bonds that showed on camera.

Laura Dern will be recognized by the Academy this year for this work and IFP certainly. I have not seen a film that shows this complexity in relationships since, well, a long time. Nip/Tuck on FX is the only show I see that comes close to the drama that these married folks had in their lives. However to give much credit to the director, this film took that drama beyond the reasonably tense and hectic world of cosmopolitan life and placed the events in a small town where there is nothing to distract you from each other but one another.

You enter this film knowing that the relationships are damaged goods. As the story evolves you become more intrigued by the sadness and duplicity that settles in every scene. The turbulent passion of these characters is always grinding again each other during the film. Each person pushes harder and harder to find out the truth - all the while know it. There are so many layers to each person on camera that they all seem to be discoveries unto themselves.

If you ever had doubts about your spouse do not go see this film. You will leave dialing ACME Private Eyes.

The writing is rich and simplistic. The film is beautifully shot and the whole cast never waivers. This is the must see indie of late summer.

Prediction: IFP Best Actress: Laura Dern
Prediction: Academy Nomination Best Actress
